To: Ms. BetelhemArega
Office of the Legal Counsel (OLC)
African Union Commission
We appeal to you on behalf of Mr. Hussein Khalifa and Mr. AbdullahiHamdoi who are the subject of our deepest concern.
On January 30, 2016 Agents from the Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Service came to the home of Mr. Hussein Khalifa, head of the Eritrean Liberation Front and the Eritrean National Council and took him without giving any reasons.
NISS also detained Mr. AbdullahiHamdoi, a member of the Eritrean Liberation Front’s executive committee, from his home in the town of Kassala and took him to Khartoum.
We fear they will be handed over to the ruling regime in Eritrea.
We strongly urge that you take the necessary measures so Mr. Hussein Khalifa and Mr. AbdullahiHamdoi are immediately and unconditionally released.
We further ask you to assure their physical safety while in detention and guarantee that Mr. Hussein Khalifa and Mr. AbdullahiHamdoi are not subject to torture or other ill-treatment.
We hope, in the name of all people concerned with human rights, that you will take all necessary steps.
In awaiting your reply, be assured of our most respectful sentiments.
